The UN General Assembly adopted resolutions on global transport and energy connectivity initiated by Turkmenistan

On December 19, 2023, during the 49th plenary meeting of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, resolutions of the UNGA Second Committee, initiated by Turkmenistan, were adopted:

- "Strengthening the links between all modes of transport to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals";

− "The pivotal role of reliable and stable energy connectivity in driving sustainable development".

The resolutions were adopted by consensus. The transport resolution was co-sponsored by 47 states and the resolution on energy connectivity by 38 countries.

The main provisions of the resolution on transport cooperation are as follows:

  • the proclamation of the United Nations Decade for Sustainable Transport for a period of 10 years beginning on 1 January 2026 (2026-2035);
  • continuation of the Ashgabat process, established following the results of the First Global Conference on Sustainable Transport in 2016;
  • a proposal to the UN Secretary-General on the need to continue the practice of international dialogue on the development of sustainable transport and to consider convening the Third United Nations Global Conference on Sustainable Transport;
  • holding an international celebration of World Sustainable Transport Day in Turkmenistan in November 2024.

The main elements of the energy security resolution are:

  • consolidating the efforts of the international community in overcoming the energy crisis faced by the world economy by ensuring reliable energy connectivity and stable cross-border transportation of energy resources;
  • holding the Seventh Sustainable Energy for All Forum in Turkmenistan in 2026, aimed at the comprehensive achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 7 on ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all;
  • convening an International Meeting of Experts on Energy Connectivity in Turkmenistan in the first half of 2024;
  • preparation of the next report of the UN Secretary-General on sustainable energy connectivity and reliable energy transportation.
