Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan met with the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety

On 27 November 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov met with the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety Jean Todt.

During the meeting, the sides noted that in recent years Turkmenistan has become an effective platform for dialogue in the field of transport. In this regard, the parties noted the importance of the two-day International Conference and Exhibition “International Transport-Transit Corridors: Interconnectivity and Development – 2024” (ITTC-2024) being held in Ashgabat timed to the World Sustainable Transport Day.

It was noted that ITTC-2024 input to the UN “Safe Roads for All” campaign is important on the verge of the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Marrakech, Morocco, which will be held on 18-19 February 2025.

The importance of the Group of Friends for Sustainable Transport, established upon the initiative of Turkmenistan, aimed at timely development of multilateral approaches in the field of transport was also emphasized.

The sides focused on the positive dynamics of road accidents reduction and the effectiveness of measures implemented by Turkmenistan in this field, including among others the construction of modern roads, introduction of automated traffic control systems, strengthening supervision over citizens’ compliance with traffic rules.

The interlocutors expressed their willingness to develop cooperation to develop safe and inclusive transport infrastructure aimed at ensuring road safety as a basis for sustainable development.
