Turkmenistan participated in the Special Session of the General Conference of the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean

On 28 November 2024, representatives of Turkmenistan participated via videoconference in the XXVIII Special Session of the General Conference of the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (OPANAL).

The Turkmen side, chairing the Treaty on a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia, was invited to the event as an observer.

During the session, the address of the Secretary General of OPANAL was heard, as well as the reports of the Council of the Agency and speeches of representatives of the participating countries were heard.

The key vectors of OPANAL activities were announced, aimed at preserving the nuclear-free status of Latin America, expanding the legal framework for international cooperation in this area, promoting international partnership in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy with account of the environmental component.

In particular, the Draft Memorandum of Understanding between the Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asian and the OPANAL Agency was considered.

 The representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan gave a speech at the session. The results of cooperation with regional nuclear-weapon-free zones and the work of the Central Asian countries in uniting the international efforts were noted.

It is important to emphasize that being the initiator of the UN General Assembly Resolutions on Zone of Peace, Trust and Cooperation of Central Asia adopted in 2022 and 2024, Turkmenistan has contributed to building effective mechanisms for regular five-sided political contacts at the highest state level.
