On 8 June 2026, the Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the United Nations, H.E. Mr. Vepa Hajiyev, delivered a statement at the briefing of the United Nations Security Council under the agenda item “The situation in Afghanistan”.

In his statement, Ambassador Hajiyev emphasized that Turkmenistan, as a neighboring country, is directly interested in the early stabilization of Afghanistan, noting that peace, security and sustainable development in Afghanistan are closely linked to the well-being and prosperity of the entire region.

The Permanent Representative underscored the importance of trade, economic and infrastructure cooperation as a key factor for achieving long-term stability in Afghanistan. In this regard, particular attention was drawn to major regional projects implemented with the participation of Turkmenistan, including the Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India (TAPI) gas pipeline, the Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan (TAP) power transmission project, as well as railway and transport connectivity initiatives.

Ambassador Hajiyev stressed that these infrastructure and socio-economic projects are primarily aimed at improving the living conditions of the Afghan people, creating employment opportunities and promoting sustainable economic development. He noted that such initiatives should not be viewed through the prism of support for any political forces, but rather as practical contributions to regional stability and prosperity.

The statement also reaffirmed the importance of maintaining international engagement on Afghanistan, including within the framework of the Doha Process. In this context, Turkmenistan emphasized the need for practical, balanced and forward-looking approaches aimed at ensuring peace, stability and sustainable development in Afghanistan and the wider region.

Ambassador Hajiyev reiterated Turkmenistan’s readiness to continue contributing to regional and international efforts that foster constructive dialogue, confidence-building and mutually beneficial cooperation for the benefit of the Afghan people and the region as a whole.
