PARTICIPATION OF THE DELEGATION OF TURKMENISTAN IN THE MEETING OF THE INTERGOVERNMENTAL COMMITTEE FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE OF UNESCO

From November 27 to December 3, 2022, the 17th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage is being held in Rabat, Morocco.

The meeting is attended by representatives from 180 participating countries,
non-governmental organizations, cultural institutions and other stakeholders from around the world. The Turkmen side in the session is represented by the Ambassador of Turkmenistan to France, the Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to UNESCO M.Charyev and the Executive secretary of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO Ch.Rustamova.

During the session, 46 applications for inscription on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, submitted by States Parties to the Convention, have been considered.

On December 1, 2022, based on a broad consensus, the above Committee unanimously decided to include the nomination "Turkmen-style needlework art" in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

This nomination was initiated by Turkmenistan in March 2021 as an important part of the country's intangible cultural heritage. The Islamic Republic of Iran acted as a co-author of the nomination.

On the sidelines of the session, the delegation of Turkmenistan held a presentation on the rich art of Turkmen needlework art. Representatives of the evaluation commission of the Intergovernmental Committee noted the special influence of the mentioned element on the life and fate of the peoples of Turkmenistan and Iran.

On the same day, the multinational nomination "Sericulture and traditional production of silk for weaving" was included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan actively participated in the development of the relevant documentation, promoted and became co-authors of this element.

During the session, another multinational nomination "Telling tradition of Nasreddin Hodja" was unanimously approved, which was co-authored by Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan.

The work of the session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Rabat has been continuing.
