NEW YORK HOSTED EVENTS ON SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT

On July 5, 2022, the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the United Nations, together with the Intergovernmental Commission of the International Transport Corridor Europe–Caucasus–Asia (TRACECA), the Intergovernmental Council of Road Workers and the International Center for Transport Diplomacy, held a side-event in a hybrid format on the margins of the UN High Level Political Forum 2022 on the topic «Digitalization of the Global Supply Chains Management through Introduction of the Blockchain Technologies».

During the event, the importance and timeliness of the adoption of UN General Assembly resolution 75/313, initiated by Turkmenistan  and entitled «Strengthening links between all modes of transport to ensure stable and reliable international transport for sustainable development during and after the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19)» was emphasized.

The co-organizers of this event shared their experiences and opinions on effectively overcoming coronavirus disease (COVID-19) while contributing to the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

On the next day, the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the United Nations organized a meeting to launch the Group of Friends of Sustainable Transport, which was attended by more than 90 representatives of UN member states.

The Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the United Nations, Ambassador Aksoltan Ataeva, at her opening statement, said that Turkmenistan made a proposal to the United Nations a few years ago to adopt a special resolution of the General Assembly on transport. At the initiative of Turkmenistan, with the support of the UN member states, 4 resolutions on transport were adopted, which for the first time since the establishment of the United Nations, approved some common approaches and recommendations in the field of functioning of Global Transport Corridors.

During the meeting, representatives of 11 countries that have joined the Group of Friends made their statements and noted the importance and timeliness of creating such a platform to provide an opportunity to exchange views on existing transport problems and ways to solve them.

The representatives of the Agency of Transport and Communications under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan made a presentation on the achievements of Turkmenistan in the field of transport and the measures taken to develop the country's transport sector.

Following the meeting, a letter with information about the creation of a Group of Friends of Sustainable Transport has been sent to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and to the President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly Abdullah Shahid.
